Amid ongoing negotiations between Iran and the United States, Israel launched airstrikes on 28 February 2026, targeting sites and cities across Iran, with the United States joining the strikes shortly after. The attacks killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several other Iranian officials and inflicting over a hundred civilian casualties. Iran responded with missile and drone strikes against Israel, US bases, and US-allied countries in the Middle East, and by closing the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting global trade.
